Washington School House Hotel, a 12-room boutique property perched atop Park Avenue, holds a distinction no other Utah hotel can claim: two Michelin keys, the guide's marker for lodging full of "character and charm" that guarantees "an exceptional stay."

The hotel put that credential to work Monday, Aug. 17, hosting the inaugural Chef's Table Festival brunch with Guirong Wei, the London-based chef featured on Netflix's "Chef's Table: Noodles," who demonstrated Shaanxi cuisine for a small group gathered around one long table in the historic 1889 schoolhouse's dining room.

Ryan Frye, who serves as both executive chef and general manager of the property, said the festival was a natural fit.

"It's pretty incredible, just the names on the ticket and being able to bring all those different cultures and food experiences to somewhere, especially Utah, of all places," Frye said at the brunch, according to the Park Record. "To have all these big guys come to Park City and show people this amazing variety of foods … can be super inspiring for people to use moving forward, whether they're opening a restaurant or just cooking at home."

The hotel has held its two-key rating for at least two consecutive years. The Michelin Guide's U.S. Key Hotels list, announced Oct. 8, 2025, confirmed the designation. Other Utah properties carrying one key include Montage Deer Valley, Pendry Park City, Stein Eriksen Lodge, Sundance Resort and The Lodge at Blue Sky in Wanship. Only Amangiri in Canyon Point ranks higher statewide, with three keys.

What comes next: the Michelin Guide Southwest

The hotel's existing recognition takes on new weight with the Michelin Guide Southwest ceremony scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 26, in Las Vegas. For the first time, Park City restaurants will be eligible for Michelin stars, Bib Gourmand awards, Green Stars and "Michelin Recommended" status.

Jennifer Wesselhoff, president and CEO of the Park City Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, wrote in an Aug. 15 Park Record column that the guide's expansion represents "an emphatic acknowledgment of how far we've come." Michelin's anonymous inspectors began evaluating Park City restaurants last fall.

The push took more than a year. The Park City Chamber, Visit Salt Lake and Sundance Resort formed the Wasatch Culinary Collective specifically to lobby for Utah's inclusion in the guide.

Wesselhoff told the Park Record on Aug. 13 that a strong culinary scene is "critical to that four-season mix" Park City needs, particularly after a difficult snow year that hurt sales and tourism tax revenue.

A small hotel with an outsized role

Washington School House sits moments from Main Street and dates to 1889. The property offers complimentary après-ski fare in the living room and operates at a scale Frye said makes guests feel like family.

That intimacy was on display at the brunch: Wei served cucumber and jellyfish salad, huluji chicken, three delicacies dumplings with pork, shrimp and seaweed, and a sweet fermented rice and persimmon dish. Wesselhoff was the first volunteer to try Wei's hand-crimping technique during an outdoor dumpling demonstration.

The sold-out Michelin Guide Southwest ceremony on Wednesday, Aug. 26, will reveal which Park City restaurants, if any, earn stars or other distinctions.
