Riders along state Route 224 will get dedicated bus lanes between Olympic Parkway and Canyons Drive this winter, years before the full Bobsled Express line is finished.

High Valley Transit's seven-mile bus rapid transit project from Kimball Junction to Old Town is running ahead of schedule, the agency's Chief Development Officer Gabe Shields said, as first reported by KPCW on Tuesday, Oct. 6.

"Where we've completed work between Olympic [Parkway] and Canyons [Drive], we're essentially going to have the BRT running just about fully complete," Shields said.

Orange cones will come off the road heading into winter, and the completed stretch will carry buses in dedicated lanes. The full project remains on track for completion in fall 2028.

What's done

Crews wrapped major work at the Park Avenue and Deer Valley Drive intersection, adding new turn lanes, traffic signals, street lighting, sidewalks and drainage improvements, according to High Valley Transit's construction updates page. Near McPolin Barn, the agency installed new landscaped medians and finished paving and striping ahead of schedule.

Between Olympic Boulevard and Canyons Resort Drive, workers relocated utilities, rebuilt a retaining wall, created a new detention pond and improved intersections at Old Ranch Road, Silver Springs Drive and Olympic Boulevard. Construction on the Bobsled and Cutter Lane BRT stations has begun.

What's next

Over the winter, crews will continue work on local bus stops as weather allows. Trails along the corridor will reopen. Road construction resumes in spring 2027.

The 2027 phase will widen the southbound side of SR-224 between Bear Hollow Drive and White Pine Canyon Road and the northbound section between McPolin Barn and Kearns Boulevard. BRT stations with canopies, real-time information boards, lighting and landscaping will also go up.

Shields signaled the progress as early as Sept. 21, when he told KPCW the project was ahead of schedule and that most orange cones would be gone by the end of October.

When complete, the Bobsled Express will run every 10 to 15 minutes between Kimball Junction Transit Center and Old Town Transit Center.
