Park City staff want to create a grant program that would help local businesses and nonprofits prepare for the 2034 Winter Olympics.

A municipal report outlined the concept ahead of a Park City Council meeting scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9, the Park Record first reported. The proposed Olympic Readiness Grant Program would offer temporary funding for improvements in accessibility, sustainability, marketing, communications and energy or waste upgrades that provide lasting community benefit, according to the report.

No details have been set. No dollar amounts, eligibility criteria, matching-fund requirements or program timeline exist yet.

Economic Development Director Chris Eggleton told the Park Record the concept "is still very preliminary and is being presented to Council for discussion and direction. There is not yet a fully developed program, so many of the specifics would depend on Council's interest and direction."

Mayor Ryan Dickey and the council are scheduled to spend 45 minutes Friday discussing economic development grants broadly. Whether the Olympic-specific program comes up is unclear. If council members express interest, staff would return at a later meeting with a detailed proposal, Eggleton said.

The report raises the possibility of tiered eligibility based on business size, revenue or number of employees, but no structure has been proposed. Grant amounts, caps and whether recipients would need to match funds are all open questions, according to Eggleton.

Park City Mountain, Deer Valley Resort and the Utah Olympic Park are all designated 2034 competition venues. The city will also play a central role in transportation, security and celebration plans for the Games. The Utah 2034 Organizing Committee published the first edition of its Games Plan in June 2026, describing a strategic roadmap focused on building organizational and planning foundations through 2030.

Local businesses face questions about how to capitalize on the Olympics, guard against a potential downturn during the 2033–2034 ski season and manage operations during the Games themselves.

The Olympic Readiness Grant Program is one of several economic development options listed in the municipal report. The others are not directly tied to the 2034 Games. If the council signals support Friday, staff would develop program details and return with recommendations at a future meeting.
