The Park City Sunrise Rotary Club wants the skis gathering dust in your garage.
After Breckenridge snatched the world's longest shot ski record by just 10 participants in December 2025, the Rotary is collecting donated skis from residents to fuel a 2026 attempt to reclaim the title on Historic Main Street. The club posted a call for donations on a Park City Facebook community forum in July 2026, asking neighbors to part with skis they no longer use.
"Friends, we were outshot by 10. Ten. A margin so small, it can no longer be blamed on Breckenridge. At this point, it's on us," wrote Kate Sonnick, a Rotary member, in her "Betty Diaries" column in the Park Record on Saturday, July 25.
The rivalry between the two mountain towns stretches back to 2016, when Park City first challenged Breckenridge's shot ski tradition. The back-and-forth has escalated each year since. Park City's 9th annual event on Saturday, October 11, 2025, drew 1,410 participants lined up along 583 skis on Main Street, setting a new record in partnership with High West Distillery. High West Yippee-Ki-Yay bourbon was served in shot glasses superglued to the skis.
That record lasted two months. On Thursday, December 18, 2025, Breckenridge's 62nd annual Ullr Fest featured 1,420 people on 507 skis stretching 2,489 feet along its own Main Street, according to SnowBrains and the Denver Gazette. It was the 13th time Breckenridge Distillery has claimed the title, per SnowBrains.
What the Rotary needs
The Facebook post spells out specific requirements for donated skis:
- Longer than 175 cm
- Wide profile (no cross-country or narrow skis)
- Flat with minimal uneven surfaces
- No twin-tip or long rocker tips
- Clean, good condition, no rust
A Rotary member will arrange pickup for qualifying skis. Residents can send a direct message through the Facebook community forum post to coordinate.
Why it matters
The annual shot ski event raises money for the Park City Sunrise Rotary Club's local grant programs. The club targeted $70,000 in charitable fundraising for its 2025 event, according to Unofficial Networks' preview of that attempt. The event also offers non-alcoholic options for participants.
