The Park City-headquartered Sundance Institute is streaming a free public conversation on Wednesday, July 29, at 11 a.m. MT, capping a three-day program that has now supported 30 transgender filmmakers of color over five years.
The conversation, titled "Toward Trans Possibilities," will air live on Sundance Collab (collab.sundance.org) and feature filmmaker Isabel Sandoval in discussion with Moi Santos, the program's founder and Sundance Institute's manager of equity, impact, and belonging. Sandoval's fourth feature, "Moonglow," premiered at the 2026 Rotterdam Film Festival; her earlier film "Lingua Franca" screened at the Venice International Film Festival in 2019 and earned Independent Spirit Award and GLAAD Media Award nominations.
Registration is free. A recording will be posted to Sundance Collab's Event Recording Library two business days after the live stream and available at no cost for two days; on-demand access after that costs $10. The event closes the 2026 Trans Possibilities Intensive, running online Monday, July 27, through Wednesday, July 29. Six fellows are developing projects through workshops, group exercises, and mentorship from creative advisors Nava Mau, Ash Cook, Amrou Al-Kadhi, and Vuk Lungulov-Klotz.
This year's cohort: Stella Alfjaro ("The Places We Go"), Autumn Boxley ("A Man Named Autumn"), Song Hà ("All of Our Children"), Emory Chao Johnson ("Tainan Story"), Justice Jamal Jones ("La Prophetess"), and Kevin Xian Ming Yu ("I Saw You In The Flood"). Fellows were chosen through a nominations-based process, according to the institute.
"Five years and 30 storytellers later, we're just getting started," Santos said in the institute's July 21 announcement.
Several alumni have landed at major festivals and labs since completing the intensive. Kyle Casey Chu's short "After What Happened at the Library" won Best Narrative Short at the 2026 Houston Asian American Pacific Islander Film Festival and is being developed as a feature with producer Zackary Drucker attached. Helix Zhang's "typhoon diary 风球日记" was featured on the Criterion Channel through the experimental film festival Prismatic Ground. Boxley's debut short "Flash Sale" premiered at NewFest and BFI Flare in 2026, and Yu received the 2025 NewFest New Voices Filmmaker Grant.
The intensive is housed within Sundance Institute's Equity, Impact, and Belonging Program, supported by Google.org, The Walt Disney Studios, Netflix, Jerome Foundation, and others.
