Damon Enman was still conscious when Park City police officers reached him on the floor of a Deer Valley Drive rental on Friday, July 24. He had a deep stab wound to his chest. He pointed at the man across the room and told an officer that man had said "I'm going to kill you" before grabbing a knife.

On Monday, July 27, the Park City Police Department filed a probable cause affidavit in 3rd District Court formally charging Austin Garceau, 38, of Salt Lake County, with murder in Enman's death. The charge is a first-degree felony. Garceau remains held without bail at the Summit County Jail, and no court date had been set as of Monday morning.

Enman, 34, also of Salt Lake County, died at the University of Utah Hospital shortly after 10:30 a.m. Friday after being airlifted from the scene at 505 Deer Valley Drive, a short-term rental listed on Airbnb just east of the Old Town roundabout.

The killing is Park City's first homicide since 2017, according to the Park Record.

What the affidavit describes

Summit County dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 8:27 a.m. Friday, July 24. The caller identified himself as Enman and said Garceau had stabbed him, then stopped responding, according to the affidavit.

Officers arrived at approximately 8:35 a.m. and found Enman with the chest wound. Garceau had an apparent laceration to his arm.

Two witnesses present in the home provided accounts to investigators. One, identified in the filing as KL, told police that Garceau had a knife, said Enman "was a reptilian," and then stabbed him. According to the affidavit, KL reported that Enman cried out for help, saying Garceau was going to kill him. KL jumped on Garceau's back and bear-hugged him, repeatedly telling him to drop the knife. Garceau eventually dropped it and said, "What did I do?"

A second witness, identified as WW, told investigators he was upstairs when he heard yelling. He came down and saw Garceau in a physical altercation with Enman. After helping pull Garceau off Enman, WW started back upstairs and heard Garceau pull a knife from a butcher block. WW described the sound as "very distinct." He then heard Garceau say something about someone being "a reptilian," followed by another person saying they had been stabbed.

No bail, no court date

Police asked the court for a no-bail hold, citing in the affidavit that Garceau is close friends with the witnesses, which could put them in danger if released. The filing officer, who attended Enman's autopsy, wrote that the Medical Examiner told him the manner of death would be ruled a homicide caused by multiple sharp force injuries.

Park City Police Chief Wade Carpenter announced Garceau's arrest on Saturday, July 25. The municipal government said the confrontation appeared to be an isolated event with no continuing threat to the public.

Garceau's case is pending scheduling in 3rd District Court.
