Local skaters will get a chance to train alongside one of America's top short-track speedskaters when Park City Speedskating's revamped Learn to Race program opens Monday, Aug. 10 at the Park City Ice Arena.

Two-time U.S. Olympian Kristen Santos-Griswold, who won 1000m gold at the 2024 World Short Track Championships and competed at both the 2022 Beijing and 2026 Milan Cortina Games, will serve as a guest coach for the six-week session. Lead instructor Anna Quinn runs the curriculum, which focuses on foundational speed, efficient crossovers, race strategy and proper equipment setup.

"We're shifting the focus from simply learning to glide to truly mastering the power, edge control and competitive fun of short-track racing," executive director and head coach Brian Boudreau told the Park Record.

The program, formerly called Learn to Speedskate, targets youth athletes with basic skating ability who want to refine technique and experience short-track racing. Adults are also welcome.

Santos-Griswold brings serious credentials to the Park City ice. At the 2024 ISU World Championships, she became the first American short-track skater to medal at all three individual distances at a single worlds since the sport became Olympic in 1992. She won the 2024-25 Crystal Globe as the world's top-ranked short-track skater and is currently pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Utah.

Sessions run Mondays, 6:30 to 7:45 p.m., Aug. 10 through Sept. 21 at 600 Gilmore Way. Cost is $180 for all six sessions or $30 per drop-in, plus a $6 U.S. Speedskating insurance fee. Speedskates are provided; participants must bring a multi-impact helmet. Long sleeves, gloves and knee protection are recommended.

Registration is limited to keep the athlete-to-coach ratio low. The Park City Ice Arena rink features 111-meter lap markings under the ice, meeting standards for state, national and international short-track competition.

The club, a 501(c)(3) organization that has operated in various forms since shortly after the arena opened in 2004, sees itself as part of the developmental pipeline for the 2034 Winter Olympics in Utah. Short-track competition at those Games is scheduled for Maverik Center in West Valley City, but the Park City rink serves as a training ground for athletes working toward national-team selection.
