Summit County residents can now drop off glass and mixed recyclables any time of day at four new sites that opened Monday, August 3, including one at the Ecker Hill Park & Ride along the Snyderville Basin commute corridor.
The other three locations are at the Ledges Event Center, Kamas Park & Ride, and Three Mile Landfill. All four are free. No appointment needed.
The sites are the first visible piece of the county's draft Solid Waste Action Plan, a 13-strategy blueprint branded "Save Our Space" that projects $50 million in taxpayer savings and aims to extend the Three Mile Landfill's lifespan by a decade. The plan goes before the Summit County Council for formal approval later this month, according to the Park Record.
Summit County Solid Waste Superintendent Tim Loveday said the locations were chosen deliberately along commute and errand routes to fill gaps for residents without curbside service and give households an overflow option between collections. "We strategically chose these locations along everyday commute and errand routes to bring recycling closer to home," Loveday said.
Recycle Utah will partner with the county to maintain the glass bin at Ecker Hill specifically, a detail that matters for Basin commuters who pass the Park & Ride daily.
What's coming next
The county plans to add cardboard bins at the sites this fall. Food waste drop-offs will follow through a partnership with Park City Community Foundation's Zero Food Waste initiative, which launched a business incentive program on July 1 covering startup costs and up to nine months of pickup for participating restaurants. Food waste currently fills nearly half the landfill's air space, according to the foundation.
By 2027, two additional drop-off sites are planned in Park City and the Silver Summit/Silver Creek area.
Rules and enforcement
The county asks residents to place materials strictly inside designated bins. Garbage and construction waste are prohibited. A minimum $250 fine applies for illegal dumping under the county's dumpster ordinance, and perimeter fencing plus video surveillance are planned at all locations in the coming months.
Residents with items not accepted at the neighborhood sites can bring them to Three Mile Landfill or to Recycle Utah on Woodbine Way, which takes more than 50 recyclable and reusable materials year-round.
