Summit County's Heritage and Landmark Commission will take up a possible relocation of the county history museum and hear the first public update on a historic survey of the 1904 Coalville Courthouse when it meets Thursday, July 30, at 4 p.m.

The meeting marks the commission's first session since April 16. That's a gap of more than three months. It carries a packed agenda that includes new member introductions, a budget review, an ordinance update, and a strategic plan discussion.

Museum relocation and courthouse survey

The agenda lists a "budget discussion and possible museum relocation discussion" but does not specify which museum. The Summit County History Museum currently operates inside the Coalville Courthouse at 60 N. Main St., and the county has not publicly detailed what a move would entail or where a museum might go.

Kirk Huffaker, principal of Kirk Huffaker Preservation Strategies, will present on progress of the Reconnaissance Level Survey project focused on the courthouse. In a May 15 Instagram post, Huffaker said his firm was "working with the county to identify and document the building's defining historic features to help guide upcoming renovations."

The 1904 courthouse was built after the county seat moved from Wanship to Coalville, driven by the discovery of coal and Coalville's proximity to the Union Pacific Railroad. Huffaker's firm has conducted similar survey work for Heber City and Draper, according to Park Record reporting.

Ordinance 1011

Commissioners will also receive an update on Ordinance 1011, which amends Summit County Code Title 2, Chapters 2 and 37. Those chapters govern the commission itself. The County Council discussed related code changes during an April 1 work session led by Joe Frazier, according to council records. The full text of the ordinance has not been made publicly available.

New members and strategic plan

The County Council approved new appointments to the commission on Wednesday, June 24. Those members will be formally introduced Thursday. The commission's strategic plan, dated Wednesday, July 15, will also be reviewed.

The meeting takes place in Conference Room 1 of the Summit County Courthouse, 60 N. Main St., Coalville. Residents can also join via Zoom. Public comment on non-agenda items is accepted, with a three-minute limit per speaker.
