Utah artists can apply for $4,000 commissions to build holiday-themed installations inside gondolas at Canyons Village and snow globes on Historic Main Street.
The Arts Council of Park City and Summit County has opened a call for its annual Gondola & Snow Globe Art Stroll. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Mountain Time on Friday, Oct. 2. Artists must be Utah residents, and Summit County residents will get preference.
The project is a three-way collaboration between the Arts Council, the Canyons Village Management Association (CVMA) and the Historic Park City Alliance (HPCA). The Arts Council accepts all applications, but CVMA and HPCA staff and board members make the final selections. The Arts Council is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, according to TownLift.
This year's theme is "Holiday Lights."
Proposals should include elements of movement, festive lighting and a hidden silver snowflake that visitors can hunt for as part of a scavenger hunt across all installations. Each gondola and snow globe will feature a QR code linking visitors to artist information and a map of every installation across Park City.
Each gondola sits on a 60-by-69-inch plywood platform with 35 inches of vertical space, one 110-volt outlet and a power strip. Snow globes use a 30-inch rotating base that spins constantly, so artwork should weigh no more than 30 pounds. The $4,000 budget covers artist fees, materials, labor, insurance, installation and travel. Artists must include an itemized materials list between $500 and $1,000.
Snow globe artists will pick up their bases from Webb Productions in Salt Lake City, build their pieces on top, then return the finished work Nov. 9–13 for final integration. Webb Productions will transport completed snow globes to Main Street on Nov. 19. The snow globes go live Nov. 20 and stay up through Jan. 3, 2027.
Gondola installations happen on-site at Canyons Village Nov. 9–18, with a final CVMA inspection on Nov. 19. Those pieces remain on display through April 2027.
Selected artists will be notified by Friday, Oct. 9. The contracting and fabrication window runs Oct. 10 through Nov. 8.
Jenny Diersen, the Arts Council's public art coordinator, is the primary contact. Artists who want to attend an optional pre-submission Zoom meeting at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21 must request a link by Saturday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. by emailing [email protected]. Questions about the call are due by Friday, Sept. 25, with answers provided by Tuesday, Sept. 29.
Applications should be submitted as a single PDF of no more than 10 pages, including an artist bio, three images of artwork, a visual rendering with description and two professional references. Email to [email protected] with "Gondola & Snow Globe Art Stroll Proposal" in the subject line.
