Park City Mountain has carved a 700-foot superpipe into the mountainside, giving local skiers and snowboarders an Olympic-spec halfpipe for the first time in years.

The foundation is dirt, not snow. The 22-foot-walled structure will host Shaun White's Snow League competition Jan. 21-23, 2027, then stay open as a permanent terrain park feature. Park City Mountain Vice President and COO Deirdra Walsh told KPCW the pipe will also serve everyday riders.

"It'll be open to the public when it's not being used for training," Walsh said. "So, you know, our athletes that are in the community every day can come and also get some of their time in that halfpipe, which is amazing."

Walsh said the superpipe's length matches specifications for the 2034 Olympic Winter Games, which will return competition to Park City.

Snow surfaces manager Jake Kiejko led the construction project. He told the Park Record in August that the build was triggered when the resort signed a contract with the Snow League to host its Season 2 competition and was given an early-season deadline.

Designer Eric Rosenwald, a pipe cutter and terrain park specialist, wrote custom code using a LiDAR scan to model the pipe's shape before cutting it into the dirt. Because the foundation is earth rather than snow, the resort estimates the design will cut snowmaking water usage by half compared to traditional halfpipes.

Senior communications manager John Kanaly told the Park Record the pipe is meant to last. "We're bringing the superpipe back … this is a way of bringing it back and making it much more of a permanent feature that we'll be able to bring back year after year," Kanaly said in August.

Kiejko said a core motivation was keeping the discipline alive. Halfpipe riding has declined in recent years, he said, partly because traditional pipes are expensive to build and their size makes the sport hard to learn. The resort's existing Pipetopia area, home to a beginner-friendly mini-pipe, helps lower that barrier.

The Snow League, founded by five-time Olympian and three-time gold medalist Shaun White, will bring top halfpipe snowboarders and freeskiers to Park City Mountain for three days of competition, live music and fan experiences in January. Utah 2034, the official host organization for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, highlighted the Snow League's Season 2 stop in Park City in an April post on X.

Park City Mountain has announced a target opening date of Friday, Nov. 20, for the 2026-27 ski season. Riders looking for a less extreme experience will be able to ski or ride through the middle of the superpipe.
