Park City's top girls flag football team shut out Cottonwood 37-0 on Monday, Oct. 12, at Dozier Field, pushing its record to 5-0.

All five wins have come by double digits. The Park City Black squad is only in its second season.

Head coach Brandon Heaney, who played college football at Brigham Young University, told the Park Record the program drew about 50 girls to tryouts in May. The team accepts players from across the Wasatch Back, where no other schools have fielded squads yet. Heaney also coaches the Park City Red and White teams.

"I kind of likened it to being on a bus without brakes going downhill," Heaney said of the program's first year. "… This season, we have much more of a structure."

The structure is paying off. Heaney credited the Black team's methodical offense, built around smart decisions and low turnovers, for the unbeaten run. Last year's top Park City squad fell in the state semifinals. This year's team is chasing the program's first title.

Junior quarterback Savannah Ramsey said the roster's mix of athletes from other sports has fueled the growth. Ramsey said she has matured mentally this season, learning to move past poor plays. Her younger sister joined the program, too.

The Park City teams play in the Utah High School Girls Flag Football Association (UHSGFFA), an 18-team league. The sport is not yet sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association (UHSAA). Nationally, girls flag football participation more than doubled between the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. The count jumped from about 20,900 to nearly 43,000 players, according to National Federation of State High School Associations data reported by CoachAD. Sixteen states had sanctioned the sport as of the 2025-26 season, with 18 more running pilot programs. Flag football will debut at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.

The pipeline is growing locally, too. Ecker Hill Middle School added girls flag football to its Miner Leagues this fall, according to TownLift.

Heaney said he wants other Wasatch Back schools to follow Park City's lead, naming Wasatch and Deer Creek as campuses he hopes will build programs.

Park City Black plays next at 7 p.m. on Oct. 24 against Woods Cross (2-3) at Juan Diego Catholic.
