Handle, The Nelson Cottage by High West and Matilda earned Michelin Recommended designations Wednesday, Aug. 26, when the tire company's restaurant guide expanded into the Southwest for the first time.

The three Park City establishments were among just five Utah restaurants to receive the "recommended" nod in the inaugural Michelin Guide Southwest, which covers Utah, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico. The guide was unveiled at a ceremony at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas.

No Park City restaurant earned a Michelin star, the guide's highest honor. That distinction went to Monte, a tasting-menu restaurant at South Salt Lake's Beehive Distilling, according to Axios Salt Lake City. Monte was one of only five starred restaurants across all four states in the guide.

The Michelin Recommended tier sits below stars and the Bib Gourmand designation, which recognizes good food at moderate prices. Three Utah restaurants earned Bib Gourmands: Feldman's Deli in Sugar House, One More Noodle House in South Salt Lake and Phở 777 in West Valley City.

The Park City three

Handle, at the Gateway Center, opened in 2014 under chef and co-owner Briar Handly, a Vermont native and three-time James Beard Award semifinalist in the Best Chef: Mountain category. Handly designs menus around seasonal cooking, tweaking and printing them daily.

The Nelson Cottage by High West Distillery sits on Park Avenue, a few doors from High West Saloon. Chef de Cuisine Julia Sorroche, who has led the kitchen for four years, runs a tasting-menu concept with whiskey pairings. The menu changes every two to three weeks based on what is at peak season in Utah.

Matilda, a pizza and small plates spot at the Snow Park shopping center, is owned by Ian Pope. Its signature is a 100% sourdough, naturally leavened crust with a touch of rye, cooked at low temperature.

"He is obsessed about the flavor of sourdough, and not just the act of sourdough, but he's obsessed about what flour you put in there, the percentages of flours, the flavor of the different flours, and that really aligned with what we wanted," Pope told the Park Record.

Local push brought the guide to Utah

The recognition did not happen by accident. The Park City Chamber/Bureau helped bring Michelin's attention to Utah through the Wasatch Culinary Collective, a paid sponsorship group that includes Visit Salt Lake, Visit Park City and Sundance Resort.

The timing matters. Utah ski visits dropped 26.5% in the 2025-26 season compared to the prior year, and Summit County's leisure and hospitality taxable sales fell 2% over the same period, according to a Park Record report published Aug. 21. Culinary tourism offers a year-round draw that does not depend on snowpack.

Representatives from The Nelson Cottage, Handle, the Park City Chamber/Bureau and Sundance Mountain Resort attended the Las Vegas ceremony.

Michelin evaluates restaurants on five criteria: ingredient quality, harmony of flavors, mastery of technique, the chef's personal expression and consistency across anonymous visits.

Park City's Washington School House Hotel already holds a separate two-Michelin-key designation, the only two-key hotel in Utah, recognizing character, charm and exceptional stays.
