Park City police stopped three rideshare drivers in two days for blocking Main Street travel lanes during the busiest hours of the summer tourism season, according to the Park Record.

The incidents occurred on Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24, all during the evening rush between 5:49 and 5:59 p.m. On July 23, an officer watched a driver pick up rideshare customers on Main Street, with police logs noting the vehicle impeded traffic. The next day, Pioneer Day, officers made two more stops: one near the Main Street-Heber Avenue intersection at 5:49 p.m. after a driver stopped to let passengers in, and another at 5:59 p.m. involving a driver who parked on the road to pick up rideshare customers.

Whether any of the three drivers received citations or warnings is not clear from public police logs. The Park City Police Department's general enforcement approach, as characterized by the Park Record based on public logs, is to issue warnings unless the driver is a repeat offender or the violation is deemed egregious.

A pattern two years running

The problem is not new. In March 2024, the Park City Police Department said on X that officers were asking visitors and rideshare operators not to stop their cars on Main Street and block traffic. To reinforce the message, the department conducted a dedicated traffic operation that made 47 stops over four hours.

The Park Record also reported on rideshare drivers impeding Main Street traffic on Wednesday, July 15, two weeks before the Pioneer Day weekend incidents, indicating the pattern has persisted through the summer.

Beyond rideshare stops, PCPD documented additional cases of vehicles left at red curbs on Main Street during the same period, adding to congestion on the narrow corridor.

No designated pickup zone announced

As of the Park Record's Tuesday, July 28, report, no designated rideshare pickup or drop-off zone on Main Street has been publicly announced by PCPD or Park City officials. Without a dedicated area, rideshare drivers picking up passengers along the busy stretch have few options besides stopping in a travel lane.
