Park City High School named Kyle Hartzell, a seven-time professional lacrosse All-Star and Team USA gold medalist, as head coach of its boys lacrosse program Monday, Aug. 24.

Hartzell spent more than a decade in Major League Lacrosse and the Premier Lacrosse League, where he pioneered the long-stick midfielder position and earned two MLL championships with the Chesapeake Bayhawks in 2010 and the New York Lizards in 2015, according to his PLL player profile. He represented the United States at three international championships, winning gold at the 2018 World Lacrosse Championship, silver in 2014 and bronze at the 2011 World Indoor Lacrosse Championship.

"We are thrilled to welcome Kyle to lead our boys lacrosse program," athletic director Jamie Sheetz said in the school's announcement. "Kyle's background speaks for itself, but it's his passion for teaching the game, building character and developing student-athletes off the field that truly set him apart. We are entering an exciting new era for our program."

Nobody recruited Hartzell out of high school.

He grew up in Dundalk, Maryland, playing soccer before picking up a lacrosse stick as a freshman at Archbishop Curley High School. He started at CCBC-Essex, where he won an NJCAA championship in 2004, then walked on at Salisbury University. He captained the Sea Gulls to a 23-0 record and the NCAA Division III national championship in 2007, leading the team with 42 caused turnovers.

Hartzell retired from professional play in September 2023 with 89 career points, the fourth most by any longpole in league history. He returned to the PLL's California Redwoods during the 2026 season to fill in amid a defensive injury crisis. His coaching résumé includes a stint as assistant coach and defensive coordinator for the PLL's Boston Cannons starting in April 2024, along with experience at the high school, club and collegiate levels.

The hire comes as Park City High School builds two new mixed-use soccer and lacrosse fields on the former Treasure Mountain Junior High School site, part of a $48.7 million athletic facilities upgrade. The Miners played their 2026 spring season at Quinn's Junction while construction continued.

The school has not announced a first practice date or season opener for the 2026-27 boys lacrosse season.
