Park City’s $20 million community center in City Park is expected to open around mid-December, Recreation Director Ken Fisher said.
The 15,000-square-foot facility, called The Mine, has a contractor completion deadline of Dec. 16, KPCW reported on Oct. 19. A specific public opening date has not been announced.
“So I would look for an opening right around then,” Fisher said on the station’s “Local News Hour.”
Crews are finishing landscaping and sod work. Fisher said maintenance staff training was scheduled for the week of Oct. 19, with flooring installation also remaining.
The outdoor playground and basketball courts are finished. Fisher described the playground as the city’s first with soft surfacing.
Several programs are expected to move from the Park City Municipal Athletic and Recreation Center, or MARC, including archery, line dancing and youth karate. The Mine will also house summer day camp, holiday camp and community crafts.
Fisher said growing summer camp demand helped drive the project. Moving programs will also free space at the MARC.
The facility includes a community room, catering kitchen and patio for events.
Under a rental-rate proposal the council supported in September, The Mine’s community event space would cost residents and charitable organizations $125 per hour or $750 per day, KPCW reported.
Visitors and commercial users would pay $200 per hour or $1,300 per day. Residents would be able to request reservations six months ahead, compared with five months for visitors.
The city’s facility rental page says details about The Mine’s rental options and availability are forthcoming.
Meanwhile, a wall separating the basketball court from the playground will stay for now. The council decided in September that the estimated $113,000 removal cost was not justified before the community had used the space, KPCW reported.
The wall serves as a sound barrier, and city staff said a mural is planned. All councilmembers except Ed Parigian preferred to revisit the concern after The Mine opens.
