Park City's MARC locker rooms will get a full overhaul after the City Council voted Thursday, Oct. 8 to reject a staff recommendation to scale back the project.

The renovation at the Park City Municipal Athletic & Recreation Center (PC MARC) will cost more than $850,000, up from an original estimate of $750,000. Construction is expected to start in January, with the city aiming to finish before the pools reopen for summer, KPCW first reported.

Recreation Division Manager Sadie Hennefer told the council that aging steam rooms and plumbing have caused water damage and mold that can no longer be patched over.

"The mold within locker rooms is no longer able to be effectively managed," Hennefer said at the Thursday, Oct. 8 meeting. "… It's in areas deep within the walls that now need to be removed and renovated."

Staff had recommended a reduced scope because of the rising price tag.

A majority of councilmembers disagreed.

Councilmembers Tana Toly and Molly Miller said they preferred doing the work all at once rather than disrupting MARC service twice with a phased approach. Councilmember Bill Ciraro argued that membership fees help justify the spending. The exact vote count from the Oct. 8 meeting was not available in public records reviewed for this article.

The full project includes larger lockers, new plumbing, new faucets and sinks, and red-light saunas to replace the steam rooms that have been the source of the water problems. Assistant Recreation Director Tate Shaw said the current lockers are too small to fit standard gym bags and tennis rackets, forcing some patrons to use two lockers at once.

The new lockers will be bigger but number half as many as the current ones. Hennefer said that should be enough because only about half of the existing small lockers see regular use.

The PC MARC, at 1200 Little Kate Road, is a public drop-in facility whose outdoor pools opened in June 2026 after a separate renovation funded by a $6 million council allocation in 2023.
